One possible reason for the high layoff total in the District of Columbia is the impact of federal workforce reductions in 2025. The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has led efforts to reduce staffing across multiple federal agencies, has coincided with large numbers of layoffs tied to government jobs. These policy-driven workforce cuts are likely reflected in higher layoff counts in D.C., where many federal jobs are concentrated.
